Responce to Age of digital distribution
I really enjoyed this article. It responds to technology through the scope of modern art movements. Jodi.com is a good example of a Dada inspired response to the internet. This response was executed through random links, design and interactive script. The more you click the more lost and random the pages become. This is in a very Dada essence. It is the anti web map, web heirachy of information. It is a great idea to use modern critique on the post modern tools of technology and design.
Defining and Deconstructing Design of Pink Panther
The Panther first appeared in 1963 intended for adult viewers. He starred in the movie intro and outro of The Pink Panthers. The movie is about a goofy French police detective Jaques Clouseau. Peter Sellers in the original creator and actor of the the detective. In my opinion the only person that should ever attempt the role. Blake Edwards was the directer and co-wrote most of the films. The title originated from the first pink panther movie which is the name of a brilliant pink diamond. Though the some figure Clouseau is the Pink Panther because the jewel appeared in 5 of the 10 film series. The first was the most profitable movie in 1975.
Every opening of the film had an animated sequence, created by DePetite-Freling Enterprises. The animated Pink Panther character was designed by Hawley Pratt who’s is the base of the pink cat character. Though sellers is what made the slapstick comedies work the animated cat took on a life of its own.
MGM owns the copyrights and domestic distribution to the Pink Panther. They studio has recently recreated the movie and it’s iconic intro and outro starring Steve Martin. Steve Martin is a great actor but he can not fill Steve Sellers shoes. The new films are released by Columbia Pictures in 2006, 2009 and a third is in the works.
United Artists decided to give the Pink Cat a full time gig. Mr. Pink starred in a series of the animated shorts starting in 1963 until 1980. He stared in over 124 animations and theatrical debut in Driving Mr. Pink. Mr. Pink was seen on Saturday morning cartoons, computer games, advertising campaigns. As any rising pop star a series of merchandise so anyone could get a piece of Mr. Pink. Magnets, home decor, products, T shirts, key chains and stuffed animals became a must have on everychilds list. Making the pink panther one of the most profitable fat cats on TV.
Pink Panther is a very good piece of design. The music done by Henry Moncini is a infamous song. The timing to the music is impeccable. The technology in the 60′s was hand illustration with multiple drawings to illustrate movement. This was very labor intensive. The style of the clip is very retro to the 60′s- 70′s era. The fonts are modern with some experimental towards the end of the narrative. I believe they used the pink of the panther as the basis of their color palette. The colors tend to move to black, white and red to complement the pink. I also like how the first 30 seconds gives you a history, concept and introduction to story. Then the narrative moves into the slapstick comedy similar to the movie content. In the end you sort of have a finally of effects and type treatments. This short animation is a classic because it is so well done and the characters make their audience laugh.
My Angry Animated Text Project1*************
For project one I picked one of my favorite bands COC or better known as Corrosion of Conformity. The song Rise River Rise is a poetic dialog of the end of a relation ship and a natural phenomena of a flood. Kind of like cry me a river. It is a very heavy and angry sort of melody. The song does have 1 minute instrumental that I plan to clip and animate too. I want to keep the theme of comparing ending love to a natural disaster. I changed the words from flood/river to sandstorm/ desert. I’m really into alchemy and recently breaking up with someone so this should be a good piece for me to work on.
Design wise I am thinking of a desert back ground this some distortion animation like particles moving. Text will be white, black and maybe occasional red. The text will be big or maybe simular to the environment of vast desert.
